Harry Kane's penalty helps England 1-1 draw with Germany

Harry Kane’s penalty helps England 1-1 draw with Germany.

England avoided a second straight Nations League loss on Tuesday. Thanks to Harry Kane’s 50th goal for his nation, a calmly executed late penalty rescued a 1-1 draw away to Germany.

Germany took the lead in the 50th minute thanks to Jonas Hofmann’s goal.

Still, they could not finish off England, and Kane equalized in the 88th minute after being tripped in the area.

After losing to Hungary for the first time in 60 years in their League A, Group Three opener on Saturday, England played an experienced squad at a raucous Allianz Arena. Still, it was second best for most of the match.

Hofmann of Borussia Moenchengladbach had the ball in the England goal early on as Germany controlled. Still, his celebrations were cut short by an offside flag.

He was not to be denied. Five minutes after the break, he beat Jordan Pickford with a strong, slightly deflected effort from outside the penalty area.

England had opportunities despite a problematic effort, with Bukayo Saka inches away in first-half stoppage time and Mason Mount and Harry Kane both denied by Germany goalkeeper Manuel Neuer as England sought a leveler.

“It’s essential to demonstrate the mindset,” Kane said. “At 1-0 down, we showed fantastic character to come back into the game and win a victory.” Kane is currently three goals behind England’s all-time leading scorer Wayne Rooney.

“We were up against a solid Germany team. However, we kept going, and in the final half-hour, we played our greatest football.”

It was a disappointing finale to the game for Germany, who had already drawn both of their group encounters. England is at the bottom of the group and will meet group leaders in Italy this weekend.

For most of the evening, Germany looked significantly quicker. They believed they had taken the lead when Hofmann sprinted through and past Pickford halfway through the first half, but a VAR review proved that the offside decision against him was correct.

Jamal Musiala, a Stuttgart-born youngster who grew up in London, was a thorn in England’s side down the left flank and was engaged in most of the fine work on the home side.

After a beautiful build-up, Joshua Kimmich sent the ball to Hofmann, who was allowed to turn too quickly and hit a shot that Pickford got a mighty hand to but couldn’t prevent from getting into the goal.

Pickford played far better after that to keep England in the game, denying Thomas Mueller’s well-hit attempt and Kai Havertz and Timo Werner as England clung on.

As reviewing a pitch-side monitor, the Spanish referee awarded a penalty after Kane burst into the area on Jack Grealish’s pass and was clipped by a sliding Nico Schlotterbeck.

After that, Kane sent Neuer the wrong way to give England something to cheer about, but manager Gareth Southgate will have enough to think about.
