How can a vaccinated person get infected with Covid-19?

Currently, there is no definitive evidence. First of all, it should remember that no vaccine is 100 percent effective. All types of vaccines have a slight chance of causing breakthrough infections, Dr. Anjan Bhattacharya said.

Among the three Covid-19 vaccines that received emergency approval in India, the Covishield vaccine is 70% effective in preventing Covid-19 disease (one month difference between doses), Covaxin 78%, and Russia’s Sputnik V 92%.

Second, protective antibody levels generally develop after two to three weeks of receiving the second dose of the Covid-19 vaccine. Hence, one can become infected during this period.

Third, vaccines have been shown to prevent disease, but perhaps not infection. In simple terms, the condition shows symptoms while the infection tests positive for the virus (can be asymptomatic). Covid-19 vaccines are effective in preventing mild symptoms, serious illnesses, and hospitalizations. But it’s still possible for a fully vaccinated person to become infected if exposed to the virus, said Dr. Amitabha Nandy, an infectious disease specialist.

“Immunogenicity and protective immunity are two different and independent issues. Immunogenicity refers to the production of only a biological immune response, which may not be defensive.”

“Therefore, even in the presence of an immune response, the vaccine cannot protect someone from the Covid-19 infection when exposed to the virus,” said Dr. Amitabha Nandy
