Sudhir wins men's heavyweight para powerlifting at CWG 2022

India’s Sudhir set a Commonwealth Games record with his total score of 134.5 while winning a historic gold medal in the men’s heavyweight para powerlifting. Sudhir’s first try saw him lift 208 kg; with his second attempt, at 212 kg, he took the lead.

The ravages of polio have left Sudhir, a 27-year-old bronze medalist in the Asian Para Games, with a disability.

In the present CWG, he established India’s medal account for parasports.

Ikechukwu Micky Yule took home the bronze with 130.9 points, while Christian Obichukwu earned the silver with 133.6.

The World Para Powerlifting Asia-Oceania Open Championship was held in South Korea in June, and Sudhir took home the bronze medal in the men’s up to 88 kg division with a best lift of 214 kg.

Sudhir, who began powerlifting in Sonipat in 2013, has also qualified for the Asian Para Games in Hangzhou in 2022, which were postponed to the following year.
