Google Play Music Shutting Down by the End of 2020

Google currently has two music streaming services running, but that will change soon. The company confirmed the official YouTube blog Google Play Music will be closed by the end of 2020. Instead, Google will shift its entire focus to YouTube Music.

It is a move that makes sense for Google. Operating two different transmission services is unnecessary. YouTube Music comes bundled with YouTube Premium, making it the most logical service to stay alive.

When does Google Play Music close?

Google is gradually killing Play Music in different parts of the world.

First, Google will start using the service in New Zealand and South Africa starting in September. The rest of the world will not have access to Play Music for much longer, since Google will withdraw it in October in all other countries. This means that all streaming functionality will disappear and Google Play Music will no longer work.

Fortunately, the music libraries will remain until December. This gives users additional time to transfer their collection from Google Play Music to YouTube Music. This means that playlists, uploads, purchases, likes, and other features will remain available until the end of 2020. After that, Google will remove everything. Users who want to stick with Google for streaming music shouldn’t postpone too long.

As part of this shutdown, starting in August, users will no longer be able to purchase and reserve music or upload and download music from Play Music through Music Manager.

How to transfer from Play Music to YouTube Music

The gradual removal of a product as beloved as Google Play Music is not easy, but Google seems to be making the process as easy as possible. The company has tools that facilitate change, as it obviously hopes to keep users on the Google system.
