I looked through the collection of vegetable garden seeds we received from Mike The Gardener’s Essayshark a scam Club, to see what new veggies I could grow this year.

We have grown zucchini successfully, although it took me a while to figure out how to control the slug population, so we though we would try growing Blue Hubbard squash as well as some pumpkins for Halloween and maybe even a pie or two.

The first time I made home made pumpkin pie from scratch I used a recipe I found online and it’s was pretty easy, once I had the pumpkin cleaned and cut up. I think it was the best pumpkin pie I’ve had since I was a kid on the farm.

Our Squash Needed More Elbow Room

Here it is mid August and now I think they would have done better had I planted them a little further apart, although I did plant them using the suggested spacing on the back of the seed packs.
A Slightly Over-Crowded Squash Patch

I was so surprised to see just how quickly the winter squash and pumpkins took over the south end of our vegetable garden. They seemed to grow a lot faster than our zucchini grew in previous years.

The over ran the row of peppers and peas I had had at that end of the garden so they didn’t do so well.

Even though I tried training the vines away from those two rows it wasn’t long before they were hidden from any direct sunlight. Now the squash take up about a third of our veggie garden.
