UK approved updated Moderna Vaccine works against Covid-19 and Omicron both.

The UK is the first nation to have licensed an updated Covid-19 vaccination that can target both the original and the Omicron version of the virus.

The UK pharmaceuticals authority (MHRA) authorized the so-called “bivalent vaccination,” produced by the US pharmaceutical firm Moderna, as a booster for adults after determining that it met the UK regulator’s requirements for quality, safety, and efficacy.

The Commission on Human Medicines, the government’s independent expert scientific advisory body, approved the booster vaccination after carefully examining the available data, according to a statement from the MHRA.

It also cited an exploratory analysis in which it was discovered that the vaccine was found to generate a good immune response against both Omicron offshoots BA.4 and BA.5. It is currently dominant.

The agency’s decision was based on clinical trial data that showed the booster triggered “a strong immune response” against both Omicron (BA.1) and the original virus variant.

The MHRA Chief Executive June Raine noted that the original generation of Covid-19 vaccinations still provide significant protection against the illness and save lives. However, with the virus’ continued evolution, “what this bivalent vaccination provides us is a sharpened weapon in our armory to help defend us against this illness.”
