Coming down the track and hitting spinners over the ropes was not his strongest suit, but on skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s suggestion, CSK opener Devon Conway did it with tremendous success against DC in the IPL.
Conway stated that Dhoni’s coaching on controlling spinners helped him make his third consecutive half-century this season after guiding CSK to a 91-run triumph with a 49-ball 87 that included seven fours and five sixes.
“I really have to give MS credit,” Conway stated after the game.
“I swept a lot in the final game, and I regrettably went out playing the sweep.” ‘I believe the lads will attempt to bowl fuller to you tonight,’ Dhoni said. So maybe come out and smack them square in the face.'” He provided me a general idea of how to do it, “explained the New Zealander.

Conway, who had undefeated scores of 85 and 56 in previous games, normally plays the sweep shot against spin but was dismissed in CSK’s last game against Royal Challengers Bangalore when he tried one against leg-spinner Wanindu Hasaranga.
He not only swept and reverse-swept against DC, but he also rushed at the DC bowlers to knock them down. He took four balls from spinners Axar Patel and Kuldeep Yadav, all of which went for sixes.
Assistant coach and former Australia batter Mike Hussey, with whom the Kiwi speaks before games, is another CSK legend who has been assisting Conway.
On people comparing him to Hussey, Conway stated at the post-match press conference, “I guess I’ve heard it a few times already, which is pretty nice.”
“To be compared to one of the all-time greats, Mike Hussey… it’s quite wonderful to be in that company.”
“He has a wealth of information and expertise.” Not only in the IPL but all across the globe. It’s critical for me as a player to keep talking to him, learning from him, and receiving some advice when I need it.” Since making his debut in 2021, the 30-year-old right-handed hitter has played seven Tests, three One-Day Internationals, and 20 Twenty20 Internationals.
“The key for me is to keep things simple and true to myself as a player.”
My plan is straightforward. Try to play solid cricket shots in the first six (overs) and assess the scenario, the pitch, and the circumstances. I maintained contact with Rutu (Ruturaj Gaikwad) on the other end.
“He’s a great player who keeps his cool in the crease, so he and I have terrific conversations and compliment one other well in the middle.”
