Mumbai India defeats Chennai Super Kings by 5 wickets in IPL 2022

Mumbai Indians recovered from a grave situation after bowling out Chennai Super Kings for 97, due to a superb performance from their bowlers, to win by five wickets in IPL 2022 Match 59 at the Wankhede Stadium on Thursday.

Mumbai Indians were in trouble at 33/4, losing their top hitters Ishan Kishan and captain Rohit Sharma cheaply after Daniel Sams grabbed 3/16. At the same time, Riley Meredith (2/27) and Kumar Kartikeya (2/22) contributed effectively with the ball to help bundle out CSK to a low score.

Thilak Varma (34 not out, 32 balls, 4×4), Hrithik Shokeen (18, 23 balls, 2 x 4), and Tim David (16 not out, 7 balls, 6 x 2) batted sensibly to enable them to reach 103/5 and win their third match in a row.

The Mumbai Indians pacers bowled solid lines and hard lengths, making good use of the juice in the wicket. Even in the eighth over, the ball was swinging, but there were no demons on the pitch. CSK were hard done by a few times, but their hitters failed to apply themselves to the conditions and strong bowling.

Daniel Sams took 3/16 to start the bowling, while Riley Meredith (2/27) and Kumar Kartikeya (2/22) added to the pressure as CSK were bowled out for 97 in 16 overs, unable to recover from the early blows.

MS Dhoni, the captain of Chennai Super Kings, fought alone for 36 runs, smashing four boundaries and two sixes. He and Dwayne Bravo put up 39 runs for the seventh wicket before Bravo was wonderfully caught at short cover by Tilak Varma.

In response, Mumbai seemed in danger, finishing the powerplay at 36/4, just marginally better than CSK, who were 32/5. Mukesh Choudhary bowled impressively, taking 3/23 in four identical overs, challenging the Mumbai Indian hitters with his exceptional line and length and use of the pitch’s juice. However, the final score of 97 did not provide CSK with an adequate cushion.
