India is set to play the South Africa series secretly because of Covid-19: Spectators will not accompany south Africa’s upcoming game with India because of the outbreak of Covid-19 infection, Cricket South Africa (CSA) announced on Monday.

South Africa will play India in a three-test series starting on Sunday in Centurion. In addition, the teams will also participate in three international matches beginning from the 19th of January.

The South African board said in an announcement it was a decision that allowed for playing behind-closed-doors was taken in conjunction together with the Indian cricket body (BCCI)

“This decision was taken to avoid any breaches that could compromise the tour from a Covid-risk perspective and also maintain a hazard-free bubble environment,” the statement said.

The statement further stated it was taken to serve the sport’s best interests and the safety and health of staff and players.

South Africa reported a record number of daily infections with Covid-19 last week, in a 4th wave believed to be due to Omicron.
